Upper Norwood Library aka Crystal Palace Library

I spent some time over December redoing the library for Crystal Palace called Upper Norwood Library .

The finished result is a site that now runs on word-press a full professional CMS as opposed to HTML.

As the library is an independent organisation  it was a freebie for them and should help increase visitors.

How to setup Filezilla : Quickly and easily

Here is a tutorial on how to setup a free FTP programme called Filezilla – This makes it possible to transfer from your local machine to your server in a tree structure just like from one hardrive to another. I’ll try and explain this in as much detail and explanations as possible hopefully without sounding patronising and I will actually explain how to do things as opposed to saying that, then going dive head long into the depths of uber complex niche subjects as if you know exactly what  I mean, as some writers do.

A brief introduction to tutorials and post on this blog

When looking for information on-line I believe there is a gap between what is taken for granted that the user already knows and what they actually know. There is essentially  an area missing where people dont explain the basics especially with technology but across all subjects ; take cooking programmes, have you ever noticed how they pretty much only ever do very advanced food that most people don’t have time to cook or practice for; where are the cooking shows that have how to chop vegetables properly? And this isnt just me saying this I have spoken to a real chef and she agrees having seen this need. So  theres a tip for anyone looking for a niche and all you bloggers teaching people thing – cover the basics aswell as the advanced.

The  tutorial itself:

filezilla is open source so its absolutely free to use : http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client

For this tutorial we wan the client version not server – so choose your correct OS inc 32 or 64 bit from the above link

Step 1  : Setup filezilla like any other program just click ok untill its installed

step 2 : identifying the areas to use – here in red we can see the computer tree of all your folders on your machine – and underneath the contents-of the folder in blue. Later we can just drag from the desktop or folder over to the server directory on your website. This is how scripts and code can be added and edited very easily.

Step 3 : Now we setup the Filezila with your host so you can access your website files and folders -[commonly called directories] – So cick on the icon shown here in teh top right hand corner. A pop up will show called site manager – If you have more than one website on a host they can all be accessed from one entry on the site manager – it actually  gives you complete access to the entire server and all websites on your cpanel, so unless you have a site hosted on a different server you dont need to add fresh entries.l

However if you do have more than one host like me just add a new site and name it accordingly. This is actually very important because you if you edit the wrong site you can delete important files – so make sure you name them descriptively. Mine says h9 A so I know its my host nine account which I setup first .

Step 4 : For host add your website address with the “ http://www.”  - for the port you can leave it empty – however if you problems use 21 this usually works or contact your host they should help.

logon type should be normal – so change that with the drop down menu

our user and password should be your cpanel user name and password – it should also be in your welcome email from your host marked clearly as FTP login.

Thats it to save it press ok -

Step 5 : Now if that login setup works correctly you should see “Directory Listing successful” if not you then you have to check your login details are correct and the port is correct.

So now you can transfer files between you desktop and your website very easily – just click and drag between the two. Public html is where you websites files are kept. Thats it for setting up an FTP – Filezilla  explaining how it works and how to edit code shall have top wait for another tut .

This is a very good quick tip – so many times I see even very advanced seo professionals using the captcha  for the google kw tool - which is a waste of valuable time. I use this tool all the time to advance my google rank for this blog and others and even if you don’t use the tool you should check it out; even if its just to see how many people search for “talking dogs ” and random but amusing information like that – its 22 k every month  by the way – which I find amusing.

Anyway I digress – if you sign in from the top right hand corner you get a no captcha experience of googles kw tool – which saves you maybe 20 seconds; which soon adds up, if you use it five times a day for a month thats half an hour, which is 6 hours a year or 480 hours in a lifetime. You get the picture ; have an awesome week:D

6. Prices – are they affordable and yet good enough to hire? A professional web design can cost from £200 to £2000 for a freelance or small design firm – the key here is not to judge on prices –ideally see if there work is what you require and whether you trust them then see if you can afford them. If you buy solely on price you may not get what you wanted.

What is web design– why it is important

“What is web design “? A lot of people ask me that – alot The quick answer is that web design is a way to layout an online kind of leaflet with images and text. “Web design is the process of designing websites — a collection of online content including documents and applications that reside on a web server/servers. There are of course many variations and much more advanced levels to these variations of web design. The bread and butter of websites are blogs –These day the geeks and elders of the web have found that a chronological diary style commonly reffered to as a blog is an excellent way to organise content, and if you think about it it is. So to address the main question and title of this post : what is web design In essence beyond a layout which is coded with html and styled with css (cascading style sheets) there are more interactive and complex elements using other languages such as JavaScript and then of course php or ASP .  In its strictest sense web design is the design of the site – the look and feel , with colours fonts and layout as opposed to the code which is the development side. So especially in agencies and large companies there are dedicated web designers who don’t code and developers who code up these designs. However in general the term web designer covers the design and code. What is web design – why its important Web design is an essential part to any business , it is said that content is king however the phrase design is queen or government is also true – it has a massive effect on what visitors do how long they stay and if they return. I would say that it is an even balance between the two. So as a business you should always look to have the latest & best design you can afford, your website is essentially your second shop front. This was one of the first print jobs I’ve done . Usually glued to the computer literally 17 hours a day recently the only printing g I do is from my canon.

So after three reprints at the local printers I was finally happy and had ironed out all mistakes.

The mistakes just didnt show up – a good tip is to get at least one person to proof read the design before its printed. I had to throw away about 200 prints – here are the final good copies which are now posted up around London in cafes , universities & business’s .
